ok this is surprising. I thought the spec call for stainless was because
a diesel would get hotter. What is the other reasons then? Other than
selling you up priced pipe?

You could probably make it safe eventually with a torch but why bother? Without the zinc galvanizing it will rust.

Why stainless? It doesn't rust.

Dickinson sells a flue guard to prevent burns.

Re: Dickinson Heater Questions - V.S. Sigmar V.S.?

I this part of the world Reflecks stoves are quite popular, similar operating principle to Sigmar or Dickensen (pot burner with drip feed). A lot of the fishing boats use them. They're not cheap though!

I was given one but it was knackered. The regulator had rusted to nothing, and the burner pot was also so rusty you could poke a hole in it with finger.

As a temporary measure, I've removed the broken parts and have installed a camping stove burner inside. This gives off about 3kW and runs off a small bottle of liquid fuel with integral pump. It's a Chinese copy of the MSR hiking stove design. As a heater, it works reasonably well, but the fuel bottle only last for two or three hours, and it's pretty noisy too.

That guard looks like it might be effective. Might radiate a bit as well. Still looking for an answer about how much stove alcohol to use to preheat the burner. I like the concept but its a bit scary.

Re: Dickinson Heater Questions - V.S. Sigmar V.S.?

Idora,

I use alcohol to start, but I can't say the quantity as I use two short "squirts" from a small, repurposed plastic container with a cap like this:

My procedure is to light the alcohol and then immediately activate the deisel flow. By the time the alcohol is burnt away, enough diesel has accumulated (and warmed) to seamlessly begin burning.

Re: Dickinson Heater Questions - V.S. Sigmar V.S.?

Our Formosa has a factory installed solid fuel heater. The first time we tried to use it we learned the very thin stainless exhaust had pinholes in it from corrosion. I replaced everything from the heater up, I used 3"(I think) stainless exhaust pipe for a car/truck with wide stainless clamps that wrap around the joint so there are no leaks. I also used exhaust wrap where it's needed to keep things from getting to hot.
We don't use it a lot but it gets the job doen when we need it. We us Java logs cut into 4" sections and add real wood when we need to.

Your best bet is to use what the heater manufacturer offers as far as stack, deck fitting, etc. Trying to save a few bucks may cost you more in the end.

Dickinson stove pipe lasts a very long time - 10 to 20 years on a diesel stove.

The stainless tubing and clamp are far stronger and imho better quality so I am not sure how it will cost you more in the end? You will actually "save a few bucks" going with the thin wall stuff from Dickinson.
I wanted something stronger but if you're uncomfortable then by all means you shouldn't be using anything not specified by the manufacturer.

I used this Dickinson thru-deck fitting:

And this Dickinson cap:

Re: Dickinson Heater Questions - V.S. Sigmar V.S.?

wow, sweet install !* must be nice to have that sorta room to work with.
Any recommendations for a (much) smaller boat? Not a lot of useable bulkhead on a 27 footer! Currently torn between the small Websto air-top d2000(?) and Newport diesels. Similar in price (OMG!) and close on BTU. Lots of owner input on Newport's, but little on boat-use of the (usually automotive/truck/VW camper) Webasto air top!?

Any reviews/users?

TIA,
Paul

Re: Dickinson Heater Questions - V.S. Sigmar V.S.?

If you are looking at a Webasto or Espar buy the marine model. The truck models are designed for a very short exhaust and will not work well if it is as long as it has to be in most boat installations.

There is a better solution for small spaces than a Dickinson Newport. Look at the Sig 100. Welcome to SigMarine.com - Products - SIG-100
