Difference between international pre-kote and yacht primer

I need to paint some marine ply for platforms in the bilge to support some items. Can someone explain the difference between intentional yacht primer and pre-kote products? I’ll be costing new marine ply. Have used their single pack products in the past but can’t remember which primer/s I used.

Thanks in advance.

Coat them with epoxy, if done well they will outlive the boat.

I don’t want to use epoxy. I can’t remember asking for that advice in the original post.

International yacht primer its a monocomponent primer and Pre kote for international its a 2 epoxy based primer.

Pre kote outlast yacht primer.

I'm not entirely sure which products you mean. Interlux Pre-kote is the recommended single-pack primer for Interlux Brightside single-pack paint. If you're just using home-center "marine grade" fir plywood it will take many coats to close the grain and seal the wood properly and you will have to be careful to let each coat dry completely or you'll end up with a sticky mess that will take six months to dry. The advice upthread to at least start with a thin layer of epoxy will save you time and money.

If you're using Meranti or something similar you can skip the epoxy layer.

Sorry , my bad, i mistake Pre kote with Primekote. Pre kote its a 1 part primer when Primekote its a 2 based epoxy primer.

Re: Difference between international pre-kote and yacht primer

Most one-part marine primers, regardless of brand, are pretty much the same.

Two-part primers are usually epoxy-based and far more protective and durable, but will not offer the same level of protection that a good first soak in penetrating epoxy will give.
If the space you're using these in is not perpetually wet, use the one-part primer of your choice--they're all similar.

If it's a damp space, my favorite 2-part primer is 545. If a boat is so wet that a pre-soak in penetrating epoxy is desirable, you need a new boat.

Re: Difference between international pre-kote and yacht primer

If anyone is interested I spoke with my contact for the distributor of international paints and they informed me that both of these have been replaced with their “One UP” product, a one part primer/sealer. I purchased this and have to say it’s horrible to work with. Like painting tar, terribly hard to apply as the surface constantly moves as it sticks to the brush.
