Dinghy repair...MEK or Acetone?

Is there any significant difference in using MEK vs. Acetone to prep / clean a small puncture patch on underside of a dinghy main tube? Everything I read on web or watch on UTube says to use MEK but I'm not convinced it's all that critical.
Thx for guidance.
Cheers, Rol1964

Re: Dinghy repair...MEK or Acetone?

I tried to buy MEK here at the Algarve last week to renovate my PVC Zodiac.

Noone had it, I asked at a few companies who repair dinghies professionaly, they all claim to use Acetone themselves.

So likely it works.

Both work. Acetone flashes off more quickly than MEK.

Regarding flashing off quickly, the glue get applied once the acetone has fully flashed off, does it? Or does the surface still need to be slightly wet from the acetone?

One lets the acetone dry. I would not use it on PVC, only hypalon. What works quite well on PVC, though is pvc pressure pipe join glue from a hardware store. It's not the regular pvc pipe glue, it has to be for high pressure joints.

MEK is nasty stuff. I try to avoid it at all costs. It’s a great solvent but everything from contact to vapors is really nasty

Chlorinated liquids. Methylene Chloride is pretty horrible. Followed by MEK followed by acetone. Some people actually produce acetone with their bodies.
