DIY Central Air

Right now I have a Marine Air Heat Pump Model 12M, 12,000 BTU cooling (11.5 Amp.) and 5120 BTU heat(13 Amp.) It is in need of repair/replacement. I have been checking the replacement cost and found it to be over $2,000.

Something I have been thinking about and want to get some input also maybe someone out there has done this.

I would like to buy a new window unit and turn it into a Central Air unit. I was thinking that the cooling coil/Fan along with the controls are the only parts really needed inside the boat.

I would build a smaller box to fit the Compressor and Condensing coil with a fan for the outside, drill two holes to run the lines to the cooling coil inside place the unit on the deck.

With a little research i have found a number of Window Unit Heat Pumps that would work. They draw less Amps for the same BTU.

I guess i should have added that the Window unit heat pumps run around 1/4 the cost of the Marine unit.
