Dyneema Dux for steering question

I am considering using Dyneema Dux for my new steering cables, but I am concerned about the one sharp bend they would make when they go around the end of the quadrant to the take-up eye. This appears to have a radius of < 1". I don't think the cable/rope will have any real movement in this area.

Should I be concerned?
Thanks

Re: Dyneema Dux for steering question

I sail on a Bene 40.7 that uses regular Dyneema without issues.

Re: Dyneema Dux for steering question

We owned a Beneteau 40.7 for nearly 15 years, which came stock with regular spectra steering cables. You had to replace them every other year or you were inviting a calamity. We eventually replaced them with Dux made by a local rigger (with a couple other minor mods). The Dux cables were 8 years old when we sold the boat and showed no wear really, and the new owner says they're still going strong. I recommended he replace them at a decade old just for safety.

Re: Dyneema Dux for steering question

I would polish the grooves on that quadrant before using synthetic rope. And check/polish any of the pulleys and idlers. Anything sharp will cut the line. Also be aware that the spliced section will be a much larger in diameter than the plain rope, but ideally it still needs to be sized for the grooves of the quadrant and wheels. Finally, dyneema does not like heat, so proximity to the engine or other sources of heat - water heaters, electrical equipment, etc should be considered.

Bad Wabbit is dead on about abrasion in the grooves.
