Edson steering

I have a 98 Hunter 410
My auto pilot ,Raymarine was making new sounds .l took the cover off the steering column ,the top of the edson column was moving i would say .25 inch this caused the chain to be loose
The gear to gear distance is 12 inches.i would say the top moves .25 inches base with motor drive is fixed.l took the cover off rear, edson base is solid all tight
Have others seen this?
Thanks

Is this the sort of Edson pedestal you are talking about?

If the gear chain sprocket is moving .25 inch it shouldn't be. Obviously the bolt/nuts have come loose and need tightening. Are the bearings for the steering wheel not worn?

I'm sorry I don't follow the rest of your post. What do you mean by "l took the cover off rear, edson base is solid all tight"?

Re: Edson steering

Have you been doing the Edson recommended annual service? I'd suggest you have a good close look at the steering wheel bearings.

Re: Edson steering

The shaft broke where auto drive gear is , i removed bearings had it welded put on new bearing
When they make this part the part for the gear is screwed in and welded
All worked well for 2 months
