Endeavor 40 Repower. Help us decide and plan!

Hello!

We recently purchased a 1984 Endeavor 40 with a Perkins 4108. Our cruise to Cape Cod from Baltimore ended very quickly when we ran into a serious runaway issue with the 4108 in Delaware City.

Long story short: our planned 2021 refit is happening in 2020. The boat is currently on the hard at Delaware City Marina.

We are interested in your opinions on how best to repower the boat. My heart says electric is the way to go but my head, and my wallet, say that a new Beta 50 would be the best bet.

Here’s our options (note: 4108 rebuild is out. Admiral insists on new, non Perkins power plant. Happy wife.....)

1. New Beta with extra large alternator. 600 AH carbon foam house bank. 900 Watts solar. Traditional generator to run Air Con

2. New Beta with 48amp alternator. LifePO4 300AH @ 48v house bank. 5000w Victron inverter/charger for air con. (New air conditioning with built in soft starts)

3. Electric Yacht 3.0 water cooled electric drive. LifePO4 300AH @ 48v house bank. 5000w Victron inverter/charger for air con. (New air conditioning with built in soft starts). Largest solar array possible. 10 to 20 KW diesel genset.

Refit to include:

1. New dripless shaft seal
2. New cutlass bearing.
3. High performance folding prop
4. Rewire and clean up electrical panel.
5. Clean and paint engine room. New insulation
6. Install new fridge. Leaning toward 2 drawer fridge freezer combo.
7. Power toilets. Happy wife...
8. New air con units.
9. Ground tackle upgrade.
10. Dinghy motor
11. Dinghy and swim platform.

Major items already done on the boat:

1. All tanks replaced. (A known endeavor issue...)
2. New barrier coat
3. Standing and running rigging
4. Chain plates
5. Windlass install

Things we’d like but prob can’t afford this time around:

1. Garmin electonics including chart plotter, windex and autopilot.
2. New Dinghy
3. New interior upholstery.

Goals for boat:

1. Bahamas and Caribbean loop.
2. ICW And keys.
3. Very comfortable at anchor. We live and work in the boat.
4. Resale. This is a 5 year boat for us.
5. A simple as possible.

Very interested in your opinions! Especially on the motor and electrical. We are now on the clock and we need to make a power plant decision by early next week. Any help and advice greatly appreciated!

Beta50 + genset.

Because simple, proven and works.

Ditto.

I suppose the admiral can't be persuaded to consider a Perkins? Retrofiting to different engine mounts, control cables, electrical connections, and hose locations can be expensive and time consuming.

Beta 50 and genset. Keep it simple and standard everything for future resale.

Don't consider the electric route unless you love sailing, because you won't be motoring much.

Thanks! Admiral would much prefer the beta but I’do see your point. I’m going to call Foley this morning and see if they have one of those modernized 4108s

We do love sailing. But we also love getting to where we’re going. Wouldn’t go full electric. Would need a genset to provide power

Foley has a pretty bad rep. You may want to do a bit of research on them. If the boat is in Penasco ,consider pulling the engine and having it rebuilt locally. A lot of those shrimp boats have perkins engines running their freezer systems. Get your parts from TAD.
