Fender line digging into cap rail

I hang the fenders from the lifelines which is inboard of the cap rail. This causes the line to rub on the cap rail when wind blows the boat into the dock. During the last storm, the line rubbed a pretty good gouge out of the wood.

There isn't a place I can hang the fenders without it touching the wood. Is there something else I can do to keep the line from chewing into the cap rail?

Fenders with larger diameters. Fenders higher up, if possible. Longer fenders, so the top is level with the caprail.

Installing some chocks on or in the rail would be one way, or putting a strip of stainless rub strake on top.

Re: Fender line digging into cap rail

place a towel or antichafe on your caprail is what i do and it helps. try it.
then you can hunt for the type of chock or antichafe you prefer..stainless or bronze or plastic.

I have that problem with speing lines wearing out the finish on my rubrail. I use apiece of think leather that I tack down with copper brads. I have to replace it every couple of years.

This has worked well for us. You can make them yourself, but these are not expensive and ours have worked well for 2 years and counting.

Re: Fender line digging into cap rail

placing fenders horizontally on dock is way too much common sense for normal yotties to comprehend.
old timers understand this concept but too many new folks are baffled.

I have had the same problem and I have tried lost of apparent solutions, some of which are now at the bottom of the pontoon moorings. I am looking at these as an idea suggested by mountaineering friends. https://www.marlowropes.com/commerci...afe-protection

Stainless rub strips are the usual way of dealing with this problem. They are cheap and effective.

Re: Fender line digging into cap rail

Sliding an old piece of plastic hose over the rope will protect both the fender rope and the caprail.

Interesting. The exact subject has been the topic in Yahoo's Baba, etc, group. You may wish to look there for added responses.
