Re: Fiddles that double as hand-holds.

For me, having the cutouts is important IF you are really trying to get a grip on the thing.Being able to really wrap your hand all the way around gives better holding IMO... a lot better.

And nicely bullnosed and radiused, I don't have the slightest aesthetic carp about them.

Just looking at some of those handholds I wonder if the cabinetry is strong enough and won't end up on top of you?

I can’t speak for any, but the ones I posted have probably seen conditions most of us will never experience.

Horse for courses and all that sort of thing. I’m building a little map of where I’d apply each approach.

Full blown hand cutouts in one spot for sure, variations on the scalloped approach in others.

I already have excellent overhead grips so that much at least is sorted. (Plus I have good places to dry my socks.)

Gilow I think it's a good idea if it all blends in with the boats interior. We have a solid 50mm high fiddle that encompasses our dinette table. It can be a nuisance when eating, but because we have kids it acts like a dam when they spill a drink.
Cheers

I’m in luck there. The boat has no interior.

Easy to match that.

Having just about completed my yacht interior I know where to buy when I start my next yacht. (I buy everything I can online otherwise you spend hours and hours traveling from one suburb to another)

Bunnings
  • for all ply (incl marine) I used exterior grade ply for all interior.(Far cheaper than anywhere else)
  • "Wet Area" lining.
  • Bunnings are by far the cheapest for Formica but limited choice and they have to buy it in. (I went for white anyway)
  • carpet
  • marine paints/varnishes.
  • timber. (rightly or wrongly I use Meranti)
Hardware (Abrasives, cutting discs etc)

I normally buy on eBay but these people seem to offer very good prices. They are on eBay as well but they offer better prices if you buy direct

https://www.directhardware.com.au/

Stainless Steel nuts, bolts, screws
I buy on eBay but buying direct from bolt and nut is probably cheaper. I use SS "decking screws: for all my joinery

https://www.boltandnut.com.au/

You'll need 3 or 4 angle grinders (XU-1 $29) Cutting, sanding, grinding, polishing

I could go on.......

But really, stainless steel screws and bolts from Ebay?!

Seriously, you need to trust your stainless supplier better than you trust your mum.

Once you get your cabinetry in, try to make it look consistent, especially w/the wood trim. It will look much better overall to the eye/asthetically.

Jim did have a good point of the crumb corner. This is a nice addition to areas that will get messy w/food particles to make them easier to wipe out.

In the galley area, another thing to watch out for is the cutting board height and knives. If the fiddles are too high you will have a tendency to nick them when chopping and can be uncomfortable on the forearms/wrists.

Mac, do you ever find yourself or guests grabbing into the glass partition when things get rough? Does that worry you?

The stainless steel nuts/bolts that I buy on eBay are from the biggest and most reputable suppliers in Australia!!! (Many supply Australian industry as wholesalers)

You wouldn't buy SS fasteners from Asia but many items I buy on eBay are from the UK or US of A. You are going to spend a couple of thousand dollars on SS fasteners fitting out your hull so it's worth seeking out lower prices.

You really don't understand eBay if you suggest everything on eBay is crap!!

I don’t know about that. My rigging wire is from South Korea who have an excellent reputation for their stainless steel.

And, as luck would have it, much easier to construct.

Which is actually the gist of my original question. I’m heartened by some of the ideas in the photos. I think I’ll end up with a number of different heights and constructions, depending on the location and activities at that point in the boat.

No. It's basically blocked by the dinette. Funnily enough it's so out of the way I don't think I have ever touched it except to wipe it down...

I wouldn't classify rigging wire as "fasteners"!!

But anyhow I've bought my bilge pumps (Rule) off eBay, bearings (and seals) off eBay (UK) and all my electrical cabling, relays, circuit breakers, switches, lighting, inverter, pumps, fuse panels, instruments, 1/2/Both/Off switch off eBay.

BUT I've insisted on only buying branded high amperage switches, circuit breakers and relays off an Australian eBay seller.

I don't have any problem buying a cheap diaphragm pump off an Asian seller for a ¼ of the price where if it fails it won't sink the yacht
