Flush Mounted Hatches

Does anyone know if there is a downside to flush mounted hatches, we like the idea of flat deck, would not missed the pain of hitting a standard hatch.

Re: Flush Mounted Hatches

My flush hatches initially let a lot of water into the bilge. I have gasketed them so they pass less water, but the standing water in the joint eventually migrates through the gaskets.
They also collect lots of dirt, and as I fish quite a bit, blood and guts.
I am considering building gutters out of split PVC pipe leading to an overboard drain.

I think it is a crazy idea.

I have enough problems finding leaks on raised mounts as it is. As the deck is curved some of the hatch will have to be recessed and some raised above the deck. (I don't think that would look too good)

I have gutters and gaskets for my flush-mounted hatches. Whatever I do, if conditions are bad enough they still leak.

Maybe they were watertight when the boat was new, but I doubt it. And maybe they have become better, which I also doubt.

Not necessarily, mine are rounded and follow the deck camber. Custom made. Leaky. Beautiful.
