Foam paint chipping - paint over?

My engine room has painted foam that is chipping off and making a big mess. I am not sure how to best remedy this, ideally painting over it with a thick enough paint to seal it would be my preference. Does anyone have ideas on this?

Re: Foam paint chipping - paint over?

That looks like acoustical fiber board, not foam. If so, it's the same stuff as n suspended ceilings, and is widely available. I doubt that it was really designed for that environment.

I think that you have the options of painting it to seal it up or replacing it. You might check to see how it is attached and whether it can be removed, preferrably intact so that you could use it as patterns to cut out replacements. My bet is that it is glued, and might be pried/cut off with a long thin blade. The stuff is available by the box full at building supply big box stores.

Re: Foam paint chipping - paint over?

Thank you for the reply.
Here is a better pic, to me, it looks like painted foam by the installer, not a tile product.

I am thinking of trying a latex paint that is bilge rated maybe, I just don't know if it will form a strong enough layer when the paint below continues to debond from the foam.

If it, helps it's an HR-312.
