Galvanized screws?

So we are getting ready to move onto the boat, and I'm going through all of my tools and stuff. I've got a ton of bolts, screws and nails that are galvanized. Is it worth it to bring some of each along, just in case, or is it a waste?

Re: Galvanized screws?

Forgot to say, we are on a fiberglass boat, with plans to go world cruising, so we'll be around lots of salt water!

A waste, unless you want to fix a dock or build someone a dog house or something.

Re: Galvanized screws?

Probably not. Could be useful for under floor repairing of floor supports I suppose, but you have to limit what you bring for sure.

Re: Galvanized screws?

We haven't had much success with galvanised fixings. On the outside they soon lose their protection and create rust stains on wood and f/glass. Inside, they eventually start to corrode and become unsightly.

Re: Galvanized screws?

Once the galvanizing is gone, the steel expands causing leaks along with the rust stains.
Give the nails to a house carpenter.

It is, however, very worthwhile to bring a good assortment of proper SS fasteners. You will use them, and they can be hard to find when you need them most.

Re: Galvanized screws?

Proper Hot Dipped Galvanized hardware should be fine in a pinch. What you are talking about sounds like the hardware store electro-plated zinc which doesn't last long in an exterior application in residential construction let alone in a full time saltwater environment.

Is the hardware you are thinking of bringing have any specific application or is it a "you never know. . ." box of miscellaneous fasteners?

Re: Galvanized screws?

Seconded on CoolBeans comments. Hot dip galvanized and electrozinc plated are two different animals. HDG has been used for marine work for a very long time. Not good for small wood screws as the HDG tends to clog them. Very effective for thru bolts and larger nails.

Re: Galvanized screws?

That's what I thought. I have a few hot dipped galvanized, but mostly electro. I literally have 5 fishing tackle boxes full of them, I guess I'll have to actually use the boxes for fishing tackle now? That's a heck of a lot of fishing gear...
