Re: Genset overhall

I'm going to have to install a facet pump on the ignition for the main engine and was going to put it before the racor with an over ride switch so I can prime the racor when I change the filter.

Is there any reason why I can't tee off that to the feed for the Genny as well to prime that racor and also use it if the Genny lift pump dies? (If that makes sense.....)

It makes sense, failure mode of a diaphragm pump is often that it leaks fuel into the oil, they often continue to pump, but can’t be used because of the oil dilution.

However as cheap and as small as they are, I carry a spare.

Re: Genset overhall

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Matairea.

If you look at your Operator’s Manual, you will notice a section that says “Every 12 Months”. Everything in there is due every year. Generally this includes: Oil Change, Valve Adjustment, Air Filter replacement, Fuel filter replacement and Injector Testing. Check your manual to see if there is anything else included, but the above are fairly common with most diesel engines and Northern Lights generators.

Oh, and check the damn capacitor. No take the opportunity to replace it and move it to a location that it will stay cool.

Northern lights, at least none that I’ve run into, have capacitors. They’re regulated with a voltage regulator and use brushes to transfer the power to the voltage regulation power to the rotor.

That said, check the brush springs for corrosion while it’s easy, otherwise leave well enough alone.

I'd second that advice if you see any corrosion.

On my NL 12kw it was very hard to inspect in place.

This was the main reason I removed the sound shield and noise insulated the whole engine room, so as to monitor the generator.

I'll third this suggestion, just helped a friend replace the iron elbow on a 9-year-old 12kVA Northern Lights with about 400 hours on the meter. Once the saltwater starts to flow through them it doesn't seem to matter how much time they run, just how much time passes on the calendar.
