Green Crap

Hi All,

I took advantage of a rainy day in the upper 40's F in the PNW to attack the green crap that was proliferating on Idora. I made several discoveries. When it is semi cold and wet the slimy stuff comes off with much less effort. Idora does have teak decks so I only used soap and a rag and spong. It was quite satisfying to see her clean up so nice. I got half the deck done in one day and it has never looked better. The temp dropped that night so I will have to await a weather window to finish the job.

The best part was the looks of dismay from the folks coming down to check their dock lines. I was soaked and filthy.....but they knew deep down they should be doing the same.

I know, I know I just had to intervene before the floowers could bloom.

The clouds lifted enough that I could see out the windows today so I went down to the boat. I've got a pretty good growth on the deck where some water pooled. Next week I thought I'd spend a few days on her working and playing. I'm reasonably sure things aren't in any danger of drying out anytime soon <groan> so I'll have a go at the green then. Thanks for telling us about it. It helps to know it won't be a grind.

tools

I did find that I could use an ultra dull shave hook to pull off the sticky spots that remained after washdown. I shudder to think what I will find when I pull off the sail covers next. But whatever it is it will be dealt with. For the longest time I thought some finishing chemicals had been spatered around. I now know it was natural chemicals and maybe a little diesel exhaust.

I occasionally spray our boat with a product (Think it is called '30 Seconds' over here) designed to fight moss on paths and house decks. Just spray it on and walk away.Works well.
