Thanks

Okay, that sounds a little scary! If you need guidance then perhaps you might consider working with a professional on a project that keeps the wet on the proper side of the hull. Maybe someone in the multi hull forum has some info.

Adding a sole hatch (an access port through the cabin sole) depends on the structure of your existing cabin sole, such as whether stringers support the cabin sole, the nature of the cabin sole, and so on.

Of course that is decided by the original construction and whether you are contemplating complete replacement or just modification of what you have.

For examples of projects that included adding access ports (or including sole hatches in a replacement cabin sole) see:

It was my watch, bashing up the Baja coast in the dark, wee hours of the morning when a geyser erupted in the main cabin. Usually this would be bad news. But on a catamaran it just means that the escape hatch has unexpectedly opened.

"just"?????

Tell that to the couple on the Nautitech that went down on its way to Phuket a couple of months ago when that happened:

Re: Hatch in cabin floor

I know how to do it. But you're going to have to give us more info/photos than that.

Re: Hatch in cabin floor

It's new construction. I just need bilge acces. Floor is made of plywood with hardwood on top of it. Shall I use floor metal supports to hold hatch or plywood can be enough?
Thanks

Re: Hatch in cabin floor

gdk312 - Welcome to CF !

All kidding aside, many many folks here really would like to help with your proposed project.
This though is almost impossible without knowing what type of vessel you wish to create your "sole hatch"/ bilge hatch on.
Is your vessel glass/aluminum/wood/steel ??

Ok,so,please let us know name/make model of your boat.Additionally, please take photos of location for hatch.

This will be a great start and I can assure you -those members here that are skilled at this project will have valuable info for you !

All the Best

Re: Hatch in cabin floor

In broad strokes, you will:

endeavor to make certain there is nothing beneath the sole to be damaged

layout the cuts to allow for edge-banding the newly cut edges using thin solid wood (the roughly cut edges can be trimmed true after you remove the cutout piece)

allow sufficient clearance all around for a mitered frame of solid 4/4 x 1-3/4+" hardwood, screwed and glued to the underside of the floor, to support the new hatch; the frame should provide a ~1/2" wide ledge, all around.
