Haul out and survey near St Petes Florida

Hello

I am a canadian with a 40 ft monohull at St Petes Marina. I will be in St petes in December.

I have to do a haul out and survey.

It appears i have some keel corrosion. I may or may not want to do this myself.

I would appreciate suggestions on haul out locations and surveyors with comments on price and quality of workmanship if i decide not to do this.

Re: Haul out and survey near St Petes Florida

I used Progressive Marine Service to haul out my catamaran for some work about a year and half ago. https://www.progressiveboatyard.com/ They are located in the Salt Creek area, on the southern side of downtown Saint Petersburg - not far from the municipal marina.

They're the only yard in the area with a lift capable of hauling a catamaran, and definitely capable of hauling your boat.

You won't be allowed to perform any work (yourself) on your boat while it's in their yard. You can hire them to perform work, or bring in your own service professionals.

I had them blast away many old layers of bottom paint, and then apply an epoxy barrier coat and a couple coats of Pettit Trinidad Pro. While it was there, I had them perform a fiberglass repair to where the prop shaft support strut is mounted inside the hull. They also helped lift and mount a solar arch/dinghy davit that I had fabricated by an outside shop.

All in all, they did quality work at the rates we had agreed upon. They were very busy, and even though I'd scheduled the work months in advance, my boat still spent longer in the yard than I wanted, because of their overall workload.

We used Snead Island Boat Works. They did seem like a full service yard, but I was in and out in 4 hours or so, just a short haul for out of water portion of a survey. No idea about DIY, etc.

For a short haul out for a survey, pretty much any yard will do. They all charge about the same.

As for DIY, there are no yards in the Tampa Bay area that allow it that I know of. You have to go farther south, possibly as far as the Okeechobee Waterway, to do that.

Do your homework before picking a yard to perform a project. Google Progressive Marine, St. Petersburg and complaints for starters. You may have seconds thoughts about them.

Unfortunately, just about all of the Tampa Bay yards are extremely pricey these days. If you are price sensitive, you may end up with a final bill that shocks you or at least leaves you unhappy.

A regular bottom job on a 32-foot sailboat might run you 3K minimum. But many of the yards like to pad the bills with extras that go far beyond cleaning, sanding and painting.

A popular one is to sandblast your hull and roll on epoxy barrier coats for thousands more. In their eyes, some chipped paint is enough to require this. The worst of them only tell you that after the boat is on the stands.

One yard sent me an estimate of $1,200 to paint the prop and stainless steel shaft after sandblasting (!) them. This was in addition to other work running into the many thousands related to a bottom job.

I chose to take my boat out of the area have it done farther south after getting a round of quotes from TB yards. The yard I went to wouldn't be able to handle a boat as large as yours.

Sorry to relay bad news, but it's better to find out now than later.

Sailor's Wharf and Embree Marine are two amazing boat yards in St. Petersburg, FL. If you need transient dockage, Harborage Marina is right next door. shoot me a PM if you'd like to talk about dockage
