Re: Hempel silic one

I have been using Hempel Urethane White 559US. It's a two part polyurethane that is pretty easy to roll or spray. It seems to hold up to sun pretty well.

I have quite a bit of experience rolling Awlgrip. The Hempel is much easier to work with.

Watching this thread as I have been thinking of trying it myself. The amount of work involved taking the antifouling back to the bare fibreglass puts me off till I find out how good it performs.

Ditto.
Don't mind diving hull, but don't fancy removing when it needs replacing.

Just red the manual:
In order to maintain the system a new layer of topcoat should be applied
every year.

Well count me out.

Re: Hempel silic one

Just had another look at Hempel silic one site. It has changed since I last looked at it and now shows that you can overcoat existing antifouling providing it is in sound condition using their Silic Seal.
The protocol for applying Silic One on top of existing sound antifouling would appear to be.
Sand down existing antifouling if it is in sound condition.
Wash down and degrease old antifouling.
Apply one coat of Silic Seal.
Apply one coat of Silic Tie Coat.
Apply 2 coats of Silic One.
I see they have now increased the shelf life of unopened cans to 18 months whereas they previously said they made it to order because of the short shelf life.
It's looking better in that you do not have to remove all old antifouling as I did ours about 5 years ago when we bought the boat. It probably had about 15 years of old paint on it.
A process I'm not too keen to repeat. It took me weeks. One of the coats was like tar and no paint remover would touch it.
I note they do a propellor pack of Silic One. I may try that next season and see what results I get before committing to the full hull treatment.

Re: Hempel silic one

I'm considering using this product on a brand new hull. It seems ideal for this situation from what I'm reading.

In some places, I've read you can just touch it up annually if it's in good shape, so not needing a full or elaborate recoating annually, which would save money obviously.
