High Build Epoxy Primer

I am interested in using PPG's PSX700 a 2-part epoxy siloxane topcoat but have yet to determine which high build epoxy primer to use to fill and fair. This is topsides and deck use.

Any ideas? Has anyone used Tuff Stuff by Sea Hawk Paints as a high build primer for decks? Seems like it will do the job for less than awlgrip or similar primer.

Anyone add microballoons to thicken the high-build even further?

Re: High Build Epoxy Primer

I used Jotun Pengard highbuild. Did add some q-cels to thicken, only for above the waterline though. I was given a sample of Altex highbuild, very nice to use, sanded so easily, but 3 times the price!

I like the Jotun because it can go straght on the glass, and the topcoat goes straight on the highbuild.

Awl Quick. But I don't like to use hi build myself. Leads to problems IME.

Re: High Build Epoxy Primer

i use Ameron epoxy and a Sigmadur topcoat. excellent products, available in the uk from promain paints (they have excellent technical advisors too), and not expensive at all (similar price to dulux, amazingly).

i read that they use this paint system on the oil rigs in scotland. i have been very impressed.

hi, interested in that comment. Could you expand on possible ensuing problems. Thanks in advance.

Seen lots of problems as a result of hi build. Solvent popping resulting in small blisters in the topcoat is the most common. Most people apply it too thick and stack on coats without waiting long enough for thorough off gassing, which invariably results in solvent retention and problems. It's a crutch for lazy painters who don't want to take the time to do it right IMHO. It can help you get a nice looking job out the door faster, but you better hope you didn't warranty it for long if you go that route. I know several pro yacht painting outfits that think this way. Personally I never use the stuff anymore, haven't for years. If you must use it follow the instructions to the letter, and buy a wet mil gauge and use it.

Re: High Build Epoxy Primer

PPG's PSX700 is great stuff I used it on my mast and boom. No primer, just bare aluminum. the stuff sticks great!!!! In fact...if you put self etching primer on first it won't stick.. (experience)
