Homemade Nav Pod - Anyone Done this ?

I am starting the design of a Nav Pod for my Lowrance HD5S Ch.Pl./ GPS.
Two reasons for doing this. 1. I think they are too muck money for a hollow piece of fiberglass, and 2. I do not like the way the face of the units protrude outside the pods once installed.
I am wondering if anyone has done this or thought of doing this. I am going to mount mine to my 9.5" pedestal at the helm. I plan to make a wedge shaped box, cover with glass and paint it. (I may start with an old 6x9 car audio speaker box if I can find one)
I am having trouble with designing the best anti-theft mounting plan for the 1" tubing on the pedestal. I am planning to bend the tubing back, so I cant slide the unit up from the bottom. I may have to half round out the back of the "box" and screw to the tubing, but I am not sure yet
Any ideas?

There was an article in PBO a year or so ago about someone who made their own. It looked very labour intensive, but produced a nice result.
No anti theft mechanism, but if you have any other specific questions I will look up the magazine for you.
Cheers John

I went here: RAM Mount | GPS Mount | Vehicle Laptop Mount | Tablet Mount @ Express Mounts and bought a pair of RAM mounts for my Garmin plotter yoke. I can disconnect the plotter in about 20 seconds and store below. Cost was about $50 as I recall for 2 mounts.
