Re: How thick is your hull?

What part of the hull are we talking about? And what type of material? Cored or not?

Non-cored solid glass hull with a full keel.

Our hull is much thicker around the turn down to the keel than up at the top of the bulwards. A the top its about 1/2 inch thick, down near the keel its well over an inch thick of solid glass.

Six, eight, and twelve millimeters, the thicker toward/at the keel.

Re: How thick is your hull?

let's see... Rawson 30 one foot off centerline 3/8", Tanton 44 turn of bottom to keel 1.25", Passport 47, similar to the Tanton. The Rawson was built during the oil crisis of the 70's and probably a thin one!

Re: How thick is your hull?

New 42' cruising yacht a few weeks from launching, the cut out in my hand for the prop skeg (solid glass) is 38mm thick. Hope she'll float!

Re: How thick is your hull?

I hope to never find out! But I've read from other owners that it is 1" below the waterline.

At the same time it wouldn't really be correct to assume thicker equals stronger. Thicker could really be a chopped mat between a couple of woven mats, while thinner may be all woven mat.

FWIW:

25mm Western Red Cedar plus one layer of thin glass cloth inside and out, more glass at stem and a few other areas.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: How thick is your hull?

Hull thicknesses, of solid fiberglass, range from 1" in the keel area to 1/2" above waterline.
