How to Check Thru Hull Fittings?

I know it's a spring chore, but really don't know how to do it other than to turn them off and on.

Re: how do you check your thru hull fittings?

Hi Schoonerdog,
One of issues I've had with old tapered plug seacocks is that they don't stop the water flow even when they're off. They get wasp-waisted and allow water past, so working them back and forth with a hose to a bucket has been a test I do. Easy to operate and solidly fastened are other inspection points. If you're out of the water remove and grease the tapered plug.

Check the hoses, look at the clamps and close them when you leave the boat.

We lap they tapered seacocks if the get wasp shaped and keep them greased via a zirc fitting in the body of the seacock.
