How to remove dry decals?

I need to remove these decals. They are super dry and crusty, dont peel off and scraping them with finger or razor scratches up the gelcoat too.

Any way to easily remove them? Heat gun? Acetone?

Re: How to remove dry decals?

Try this decal removal wheel. Works like a charm.

Totally forgot about those. I have actually used the 3M wheel before to remove decals on a truck. Worked great.

Re: How to remove dry decals?

I always just use my sander to remove dry decals.

In my case it doesn't matter that I don't use a super high grit paper because I paint over the spot with left over cockpit paint.

For your gel coat, maybe wet sand with very high grit.

This is what I have done. GooGone works pretty well to remove boat number and letter sticky stuff. Then clean the surface with alcohol to get the GooGone off.

Heat gun carefully with a plastic scraper. If they are on with adhesive you will then need adhesive remover or WD40, or Goof Off to get the goo off.

Re: How to remove dry decals?

I tried one of the non-3M decal removal wheels and had no success on old decals. Maybe the original 3M would have worked better. I then tried a heat gun. Worked well but be very careful about turning the temp up to high in the hopes of speeding up the process. You can melt the gel-coat. Don't ask how I know.
