Sorry don't understand "not under". Do you mean not under tension?....gate would be under tension if tuned properly

Mine are like post #13. Eyebolt and eyenut. I ran the bolt slightly long, crossdrilled for a cotter ring to prevent coming apart. Pelican hook inside gate, I have my other side eyespliced, then cowhitched to the eyenut.

Yes, I've done this and like it. Collego uses whoopie slings. But I prefer carabiners because they are more certain. The tension is adjusted with the whoopie sling, so you do not need an over-center hook. I've seen this system on $1,000,000 yachts using soft toggled (not knotted--they are more secure and easier to handle) shackles.

Cool, I thought someone would have done this.
Any chance you a picture? I'm not sure I understand what your set-up looks like.
