how to size turnbuckles

I'm using 5/32 wire and trying to size my turnbuckles.

The threaded bolt size and the cotter pin size seem to match generally, and based on that, along with a chart in one of my books for sizing chain plates by pin size, I'm guessing I need a 5/16" thread and pin. I see some by hayn for about 60 bucks each. Would there be a more economical choice?

Has this got anything to do with it?

You need to make absolutely sure that the toggle and pin are the exact fit. I think Hayn for $60 is a great choice if the measurements are correct

Re: how to size turnbuckles

The turnbuckles come with the toggles and pins, so I'm not too worried about that. I need to make sure I'm using the correct turnbuckle size for my wire size (5/32").

Thanks

I'll preface by saying that I'm not a mechanical engineer. I would compare the WLL of 5/32" wire rope with the WLL of the turnbuckle. If the wire rope is sized correctly, and the turnbuckle is equal to, or greater in load, then you should be safe.

I understand, but you will have to connect the toggle and pin to the chainplate and this fit is crucial. I wouldn’t even measure the old turnbuckle but would use calipers to the chainplate, where you need to measure the plate thickness, distance between the hole end the edge and the diameter of the hole.

For good match with 5/32 wire, I think it’s safe to assume that when a reputable company like Hayn sells multiple turnbuckle models for 5/32, they are all rated for the working loads of that wire and the differences are about the pin, toggle etc.

Okay, that makes sense. I am making the chain plates for the stays myself out of some bar stock and the shroud's all connect to pad eyes. I'll be careful to get the fit of the pin and radius exactly.
