How to stop Rust

Replaced the teleflex cable shown in the photo below a while back, after being in salt water for a year it's starting to look like the old one... Any thought on how to stop / deal with the rust?

Re: How to stop Rust

Lots of various ways paint systems. Problem is they are kind if expensive and fussy. Really made for much bigger jobs. Often in gallon sizes.

Two smaller scale solutions are
Petit RustLoc - very high percent of aluminum dust in a urethane paint. Can be had in quarts about $50.
POR-15 - Another single component urethane, can be had in 4oz six packs. Nice for little jobs.

For either one you want to treat first with Ospho or the POR-15 pretreatment which is I think similar.

But you may want to consider to just sand it a bit, maybe an Ospho treatment, and rub some grease over the metal. Far cheaper and easier and may yield as good or better results.

And replace that nut with SS. That is probably most of the problem right there. If Teleflex sold that to you they should be ashamed.

Is that a steering cable on your prout?

In any case, I’ve found Vaseline, as a common and cheap solution works great to seal parts like this up. I used it on regular bicycles I’d keep onboard. No rust whatsoever once the Vaseline was applied.

Something weird there. My Teleflex cables always come with stainless hardware.

Re: How to stop Rust

What’s going on inside the cable? Paint, TefGel , zinc chromate spray then rust paint or add ancor lined shrink tube like you use on battery cables...lots of ways to treat the outside. Water finds its way inside and it’s the rust you don’t see that’s the big problem. I run as much Tef-Gel as I can over new cables before installing and then a bit on the exposed core now and then. Any cracks or swelling outside or super stiff to bending...usually means trouble inside.
Cables only break when you need them. Yikes. But true.
Lookie see inside please. Till then
Happy trails to you.

Corroseal Rust Converter. Love it. One of the best things I've learned about in the last few years.

Treated the transmission case where the PO left a leak for years that was about to destroy the transmission. Had previously wire brushed it to bare metal, wipe with acetone, primed and painted and a year later it was worse than before. Wiped on Corroseal and two years later not a spec of new rust.

I agree w most of that, but never mix stainless nuts and washers with steel or zinc coated parts.
Local electrolysis will quickly ensue.

Parcel and Serve.

I have a cooking gas solenoid which was only Cadmium plated, been out there for 22 years.

Cover with Lanolin (Anhydrous Wool Fat) then whip it with whipping twine. Arrr.

If you like, slide a cable stress reliever over it (Radio Shack)

Corroseal is boss. A cup of the stuff goes a long, long way. It cost about 25 bucks for I think a gallon container. Yes, by itself it last quite awhile but is meant to be topcoated. I love the stuff too.

Re: How to stop Rust

Thanks all for the great suggestions - just what I was hoping for, CruisersForum is great!

Chotu - Yes that is the Steering cable for a Sillette outdrive on a Prout. The Teleflex cable came from Sillette

Pandor - Thanks for pointing out the obvious that I missed! When I remove the outdrive in the spring I'll see if I can easily change the nut - Not sure given I don't want to tear the boat apart to get the cable out (which I had to in order to install it!)

Either way I'm going put on a good rust converter and then slather everything in a thick marine grease.

on OSPHO prior to a paint. Wire brush prior to the OSPHO.

In all my boating needs for lubrication and rust prevention, I use "Fluid Film". Available at most hardware stores. It neutralizes rust period. Good for lubricating, food grade, good to prevent rust on BBQs, guns, great for undercoating, great lubricant for snow blowers, lawnmowers cables of all kinds. Comes in a spray can with a pointer tube for specific spots. I buy this by the case and often give left over cans for friends to try it out. Grrreat stuff. Try it out!! and made in Canada...
