Huge crack under keel-stepped mast tabernacle

I just purchased an '81 Alberg 29. The mast is down and is being painted, rewired, etc. Today I removed the mast boot (or tabernacle?) that is bolted to the keel and holds the mast (the mast sits on it), only to discover a rather large crack underneath. The material of the "floor" most likely is fiberglass, though it doesn't look like it. It looks more like rock-hard red clay that has dried out and cracked. The "floor" under the mast boot is slightly raised, so my thought was to build a box around the exterior, fill it with epoxy to fill the crack, level the "floor" and strengthen the whole thing. Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Recommendations on epoxy makeup would be appreciated too.
