Hull Oxidization

I’ve recently purchased a 15 year old Beneteau 423. One of the items picked up by the surveyor indicated that the yacht would require polishing. I could use your assistance in determining whether the hull is considered heavily oxidised or some lesser degree of that. I’m wary to apply too gritty of a compound. Photos attached. The hand photo is from rubbing a circle with 500mm diameter.

Re: Hull Oxidization

If you’re getting chalk off it, yes it’s oxidized. That said, it’s very recoverable. In my opinion (many will shortcut this), get someone to compound...polish...wax it.

Don’t let them off the hook with a compound and wax. You’ll certainly pay for that extra step(then also make sure it actually gets done), it it’s money well spent.

Don’t neglect the polish.

Re: Hull Oxidization

Thanks Creedence. We certainly all agree it’s oxidised. I will be doing the work myself and my question is more to do with how significant the oxidising is. There are several compounds I can use and I think I’ve chosen the wrong one as that one is for heavy oxidation. There’s one from the same company that’s labeled “Light Oxidising Compound”. Would that be more suitable for my hull.

Thanks again.

Re: Hull Oxidization

It’s not terribly oxidized, but it is oxidized. I’d put it at a 5 out of 10. I’d hit it with a moderate compound. Then a nice polish followed by a coat or two of wax.

West products would all be fine for this. It’s in need, but not yet neglected if that helps at all.

Re: Hull Oxidization

The pro I use uses 3M Perfect-It gelcoat compound and polish. Looks great but pro’s always make it look easy....

Re: Hull Oxidization

Thanks for all the feedback gentlemen (except not worrying about it). I brought back the heavy stuff and replaced it with medium. I’ll get started tomorrow.
