I Love doing my own Sail Repairs!

It is so satisfying!! Which I guess is a good thing since I'm trying to squeeze life out of this $25 sail I bought. I can't imagine undertaking to sew my own sail. Are there patterns you can buy to make your own sail?

Companies provide cad designed and cut sails from whatever material you want, for you to sew yourself at a fraction of the price of bought sails.

It is time consuming and you need a lots of space and tables for larger sails, but it is not difficult (and it is extremely satisfying to complete) with a heavy duty machine .

Check with Sailrite.com | Home. They will make the dacron patterns for your type of boat and ship the pieces to you for assembly (with instructions of course).

As SS says, you need a good sewing machine (or, if you're into S&M, a needle and a roping palm). I just bought a Reliable Barracuda and it seems to work well through 6 layers of Sunbrella (darn corners).

Re: I love doing my own sail repairs!

Start with a very small, very flat jib. You can make one out of panels of an old sail.

Use sticky-back to join panels and pre-shape the sail. Tapes can be stapled prior to zooing.
