Ideas for DIY hatch vent / fan with seal

I'm looking at forward cabin ventilation. Seems the solar vented hatch vents are not well regarded and cannot be closed for heavy weather.

So I'm thinking of a vent with a closeable seal, and a 12v fan, with a 3d printed adapter.

Has anyone tried similar?
Vetus vs Lewmar hatch vents?

I can do a dorade in the deck, but I like the idea of clear decks and we don't walk on hatches now.

Thanks

Over our bunk we have a proper Bomar hatch, very sealable. Just inside we have mounted a Hella Turbo 12v fan. With the hatch open, any amount, the Hella pulls fresh air in and blows wherever we direct it. We also rig a small awning over the hatch, open to the front of the boat, which allows movement of fresh air but keeps out the rain.

Huge bofor hatch over 2ft x 2ft make it difficult to cover when raining.

Our bow hatch is 31x31. We have a large awning (shown below) which we use to cover/protect that hatch. It also provides shade for the bow area.

We have a smaller hatch over the berth aft which we cover with a smaller awning.

Hella Turbo fans move incoming air silently and quickly.

These awnings can be adjusted based on the wind direction to best keep out the rain. The big bow awning can be set with the front edge just above deck level for steady rain while at anchor. In case of a squall the hatch must be closed.

We had a solar vent and it moved zero air, plus it could not be sealed. When it is hot and humid you need a lot of ventilation.

I should add "for when cabin unoccupied"
When it's in use, we open hatch

Re: Ideas for DIY hatch vent / fan with seal

I tried to post a pop up add kicked me off. Children with maleware like
I can 3D print anything you like. I have TPU flexible 90,95 hardness. ASA UV proof strong Peek CF Nuclear valves, CF, all great for marine stuff.
I’ll ask my fellow 3D geeks for such a fan.
I do have data on a few marine vents including the classic.
The TPU is great for gaskets or a custom plumbing pipe. I’m making an instrument cover for a member in White TPU. The brittle ABS ones fade and crack. Mine are like a custom white rubber sock.
So just ask I can render up what ever you like including printing any thread size.
I make a water tight raspberry pi case with two water tight ports. Takes 16 hours to print all the parts.

ONe of the wacky fans I print. It removes cabin odours like bacon cooking !
The red part is two piece cage hold a teabag and activated charcoal.
The body is a two piece vortex with a wire race way to common 80mm pc fan. Then I created an adaptor from 80mm to 3” hose.
I think it cost $30.00

Outstanding - except for the Ukraine front line office address

I'll email them - the fans are no online, only the vents.

Thanks

Below the solar vent I have installed an Inspection Port which will be closed in heavy weather.

Re: Ideas for DIY hatch vent / fan with seal

My printers are from Czechia and some components were from Ukraine now from Germany. They are building me one right now after months of delay.
Hanse has a 60 foot 3D printer and completed a 38 Yacht in fused Epoxy Hand laid hulls can’t approach the accuracy.
I have not been on Facebook for 20 years but I’m in a international group whom help each other with data design electronics. Pretty much everything we do is public domaine. Buy your own printer and lots of folks will help you.
I’ve found a few designs including a triangular bladeless fan like a Dyson. There are also several round designs. One used a variety of PC fans which we all know suck. Another used a RC 26,000 RPM motor with a step down. So the blades are in the base

Throw a dozen ideas on the wall see which one sticks then find out who already made it.

Re: Ideas for DIY hatch vent / fan with seal

The Marinco day/night solar vents that we have can be closed shut from inside the cabin. Simply push the switch to turn the motor off and push up the ring collar to seal off the vent.

Of course we forgot to do this when offshore and fried our solar vent motor with salt water. The seal only works if you use it!

X2 on the Marinco nicro day/night power vents. Very water tight when shut. Closing the vent is as simple as pushing up the tube. Had on my last two boats. Put one in 25 years ago and it still works except the battery has died ( after 10+ years)
