Identifying Steering System

Wondering if anyone can help i.d. This steering system and, if so, point me in a direction that will help with information for an overhaul? It is on a 1981 Cheoy Lee Perry 35.

Re: Identifying Steering System

I'm not sure as to your question here. It appears to be a pretty conventional chain drive, in which case the components are readily available through an industrial supply house. But that may not be what you are asking. Could you reframe the question in greater detail, and include pictures of the underside? Maybe pictures of failed parts?

Re: Identifying Steering System

Hello tkiethlu

Thanks for the response. I am looking for the make of the steering system. I think it is Whitlock but can't be certain. Wondered if someone might know.

OK, it might be an Edson. Chain drive. Simple (wish I had it!). Try this YouTube on identifying an Edson steering unit.

Then, I'm curious I guess Billy, is there a remaining question regarding doing a rebuild?

Edson will know if it is one of theirs. Email and they respond.

Re: Identifying Steering System

Based on the pictures My guess would be that its not a chain drive system, but a torque tube style. There seems to be a zerk fitting in the base, to grease a bearing maybe? Can you get any pictures from the underside of the pedestal?

Re: Identifying Steering System

OHHHHHH!!!!! This is so fun.

I sent photos to the Edson people and they said it was not theirs. I could not find it in the Google search you sent coopec 43. I did find a Whitlock on another Cheoy Lee 35 but couldn't confirm it with another.

tkeithlu - great question regarding is there another question. I had some issues with steering earlier this season. The steering key seemed of an irregular measurement and 'experts' were suggesting I had a kludge of a steering system which seemed about in line with the rest of the boat. Afraid of discovering poor maintenance at an inopportune time (we are leaving for extended travel in 20 months) I've been starting over with most of the systems. Steering seems a good thing for me to tackle while under the cover here in Toronto. It's my first time doing all these things so I probably don't know exactly which questions to ask but I find it helps beginning with the identification of things so I can find diagrams if they exist.

Does it look like this underneath. This is a Whitlock pedestal underside.

At first I thought it was an Edson but then had second thoughts. Can you see it here?

Malabarista's photo is from under the deck below the pedestal. It is a gearbox under the pedestal, with a shaft running (to the left in the photo) horizontally to the rudder area. There is a universal joint (similar to a car/truck u-joint) in the shaft near the gearbox. This is a Whitlock "rod" steering system.

The other options are you have a push-pull cable exiting below the pedestal (not likely) or two wire rope cables exiting below the pedestal, in which case there is a chain on a sprocket inside the pedestal and a couple of turning blocks for the cables somewhere below.
