Installing a large mirror on a bulkhead

I've been using mirror plexiglass for years. Framed in teak it looks great. Just tell your wife the glass is really plastic so don't get too close with the sandpaper when re-varnishing the frame.

Most plastic suppliers have acrylic mirrors. Much lighter than glass. Non-breakable. Not as good optical quality. Easy to scratch when cleaning. The reflective coating seems to corrode around the edges faster than glass mirrors. My boat has a 1982 glass mirror in fine shape, the one plastic mirror needs replacement every few years.

You'll find that clear fingernail polish will stop the corrosion. We used to use this with metalized window film where the glazing was suspect.
