As a note on the 5200 type adhesives, 3M's documentation indicates that 4000UV bonds better to aluminum than either 4200 or 5200.

Google "4000 UV gummy gooey." It has been known to revert to goo after 3-5 years. It happened to me.

Sealants are not permanent adhesives. They can be, but they also break down with time. They are 3-7 times weaker in both tension and cohesion than MMA or epoxy. And they cure over days, not minutes to hours. I love some of them, but the wrong tool for this particular job.

How could water get in there, you ask? The bundled wires were for the engine controls and gauges. Any splashes leaking in through the cockpit, any condensation or other drips, would be directed by the bunched wires directly to where the screw pierced the hull. Twenty years of this and "Voilà"! Studs with adhesive would have saved me a week's worth of cramped boat surgery.

What was the core material on your yacth? Apparently it is balsa?
If the core on my yacht was balsa no way would I pierce the inner lay-up either! (I would never have a balsa cored yacht on my mind)

3 Dec 2006 — How bad is moisture in a balsa core if there hasnt been delamination? ... We had a wet core/delam problem with our J/36.

I have widespreadly used some adhesive cable tie mounting pads (exactly the ones shown) to keep electrical cables linked to a vertical wall. After one year some were already detached. Now most of them are detached after 3 y, without any pull , humidity or stress. Really unreliable!

I have used these. The adhesive isn't very good and they come off after a couple of months at best. Glued them on with 5200 and they still came off. Crazy!

I'm sure this ducting would be available from one of your Hardware Chains (Electrical Section)

If you are worried about drilling holes in the inner lay-up of the cored hull you could use an adhesive instead.

Re: Interior Attachments to Foam Cored Hull - Two schools of thought.

I like the Plexus. I once tried attaching some PVC fenders with a flat side to the fiberglass hull. When both sides were properly sanded and cleaned, either the PVC would shred or the fiberglass laminate would pull apart.

Plexus isn’t cheap, but it sticks like mad and sets up quickly.
