Find a yacht club you can join that has a workshop. Find a nice old timer willing to teach you marine carpentry on the cheap (pay his/her slip for a month, bar tab, something like that).

Great idea! Anyone know of anything or anyone like that is the Fort Lauderdale area?

Fishsail, I like your handholds, they look sturdy. I have crewed on boats where the interior handholds were held on to the cabinet with short word screws. My size is above average, 6'1" and 210-225 lbs depending on the season, so when the seas get rough those handholds didn't stay when I grabbed them for support. How did you attach yours?
