Re: is adding a fuel tank 6ft aft of the bow on a 43ft monohull a bad idea?

In my opinion are there also downsites on this bladders.
1. The price
2. You can’t take it to land with the dingy to get fuel.
3. In my last trip around the globe had I extra plastic jerry tanks in the boat
and they where never leaking. Strap them just down and you can thake
them with you to the fuel station.
4. KISS Keep It Simpel and Stupid, if the bladder leaks, pffff
insurance???

actually a bladder is an excellent way to get fuel or water in a dinghy, just pump it into the big boat with an electric pump, lots easier than humping fuel cans.

However, humping fuel cans can be made easier by having the person on deck lower a halyard to you which you put through the handle, then the person on deck winches it up, and, with the halyard supporting the weight, takes it near to the deck fill for syphoning. No worries, mate!

If possible, I'd like to avoid storing jerrycans on the deck, which seems to me as downright dangerous in high latitudes, and adding an extra tank closer to the center of the boat would be at the expense of storage space ...
First up.... I would be considering how that weight that far forward would affect your trim....... I once did something with 2nd anchor and a bit of chain that surprised me by trimming her by the head.... which is 'not good'...

Secondly... Patagonia...

Yes you will be doing a lot of motoring... I average 1000 miles motoring on the 1400 mile passage between Williams and Montt or vv.

You can doing it with less motoring if you are keen....

Between Chacabuco and Williams only sensible chance of fueling is Eden... never had probs there...

Me?
Fuel cons is 2/2.5 litres per hour at 5 knots.... 200 litres in main tank... 300 litres in bidones... half on deck... half below in the garden shed.

Refueling in Williams, Eden, Chacabuco, Agguire ( crap fuel/expensive) and elsewhere is by 20 litre bidone so you need to carry them anyway.....

You can refuel by road tanker in Montt.....

Fuel is v cheap in the Falklands and can be delivered by road tanker to the Town Pier....

Re: is adding a fuel tank 6ft aft of the bow on a 43ft monohull a bad idea?

During my total refit of my boat I added just over 2,000 lbs of additional weight.
I called Robert Perry to discuss my weight study and make sure that the balance remained the same. With larger weights such as the 3 8D batteries and the 8KW generator I was careful to offset the loads fore and aft, and kept them centerline.
If you want to test your extra fuel load get some containers that will equal the additional load and place them in the approximate location. Surveyors who do weight studies use plastic drums filled with water for this purpose. For every 2,000 lbs of load on a smaller boat you will drop an inch of waterline length.
