Is it customary to tip Project Mgr for refit

Hi Folks,

Is it customary to tip the Project Mgr for boat work? The Project Mgr is leaving for a new job about 3/4 of the way through the boat work about $70k at this point. Do you tip the Project Mgr and if so, how much? Thanks.

Maybe just me, but would tip them if they did an excellent job (within budget and on time). Leaving with the job not completed and possibly in a lurch, probably not.

Project managers do not expect to be tipped.

Most people will accept free money if offered.

Re: Is it customary to tip Project Mgr for refit

I think it depends. You always want to be fair.
If you have hired a yard or a business for the refit and he is the PM assigned to your project by them, he does not expect a tip, he is paid, likely well, by the business to do the PM job.
If instead he is somebody who you hired (either hourly or per project) to supervise and coordinate different workers and contractors, or to "keep an eye" on the project, then if he has done an exceptionally good job, a tip may be in order (or, say, if he has worked extra hours, but he has not charged you for those, you should think to compensate him somehow). Ultimately, it also depends on how much you are paying him. If you are paying at or above market rate, and it is a high rate, then there should be no tip; if you are paying him somehow below market rate, then you should tip.

This also depends on where you are in the World. In the USA, tipping is more commonplace for wait staff, hair stylists, workers who excel in their job, etc., but in Europe, tipping is less common in general. Not sure about the far East or Down Under.

The OP's "East Coast" must be "East Coast, USA". No one in any other part of the world would even think of asking this question

If he did an outstanding job over a long timespan, I would invite him with family for a dinner.

Very true!

Downunder we might drop off a carton of beer at splash time if the job was way above excellent but never for someone who didn't see out the end of the job.

We would expect the project manager to share the said carton beer with the guys who did the work!

To me, a project manager is a professional (else why would you hire him to do such a job?). Even in the tip crazy USA it isn't a common practice to tip professional hires, and as such, I'd never even think of making such a gesture.

Or perhaps you believe in tipping your dentist if he doesn't hurt you...

No, tipping has gotten way out of hand...don't feed the beast.

If he isn't paid enough he can take it up with his boss. Unemployment is extremely low, so there are jobs for people with good skills.

Any chance you’ll use his services in the future? I’m sure he’d remember you positively with a tip.

Cash no, a nice bottle of scotch/rum/wine (if he/she drinks) or a basket with goodies or something more personal to show appreciation for an exemplary job is always welcome.

So true. Here in AU a “slab” of beer is considered a form of currency. I’ve seen jobs where a pallet of slabs was given or a six pack for a small favour.

^^ wow - pallet of slabs; that is impressive. A pallet can contain 80 slabs on cans!
