I know acrylic dries to a (mostly) waterproof finish, but are the paints your artist friend uses truly colorfast and suitable for outdoors? Clear topcoats offer some UV protection, but not 100%.

Besides automotive clearcoats, a good 2-part marine clear finish might also work.

Re: is there clear top coat paint above the waterline

I've been mistaken and his. Colors aren't acrylic, actually I've never heard of this material... His paint is montana 94 spray paint with these properties :

Basse pression: Polyvalent female valve
Propulseur: Butane / Propane / Mix
Type of liant: Modified alkyd
Color: See chart
Shine 60º (ASTM D-523 ISO 2813): 15-25% matt
Dry to the touch (ASTM D-1640 ISO 1517): 10’
Completely dry (ASTM D-1640 ISO 1517): 24 h
Thickness of dry layer (ASTM D-823 ISO 2808 ): 15 micras/layer
Adherence (ASTM D-3359 ISO 2409): 0 B
Theorical yield (continuous painting): 3 m² for 400 ml
Thinner: Ethyl acetate
Product life: (Well Stored) 10 Years
Condition for application: Minimum room temperature 8ºC
Surface temperature 5ºC a 50ºC
Max humidity 85% R.H.P
Heat resistance of paint: 100ºC

Any ideas if the awlcraft 2000 clearcoat will not melt it or should I go with an automotive clearcoat?

"Type of liant: Modified alkyd "
That would be common ordinary spray paint in the US, what graffiti artists use. Also commonly sold under the Rustoleum and Krylon brands names, and in tins for painting outdoor furniture and other things. In some places (especially California) it is largely obsoleted by water-based alkyds, in order to be zero volatile content (no petrochemical solvents) regulations. But many folks feel the standard alkyds are more durable.

I would suggest you need to ask AwlGrip about compatibility before using any combination. Or, find some scrap material (sheet metal should be fine) and spray some coats to see how they react. Sometimes a heavy coat will eat into and blur an undercoat, while fine mist coats will dry quickly enough to prevent damage. How well they will bind together, and how durable that will be, is a harder question.

I would expect automotive clearcoat to be not intended for constant exposure to salt air, the way that AwlGrip products are. That could also be an issue.
