Hi guys I'm a new member and was hoping to tap into some advice re the use of 304 polished stainless steel for a dodger/pram-hood over the companioway? I ordered 316 but 304 was delivered and it was cut before the pay docket arrived and I'm now stuck with the 304. what do you think, is it likely to stain too easily or will a light polish once in a while be enough....or should I just dump it and get 316 in?

How much do they want to replace the 304 bow with 316?

Regular cleaning is the best way to prevent corrosion and add to the service life for any Stainless Steel. The goal of your cleaning and maintenance program should be to keep the stainless steel's protective chromium oxide layer intact.
After cleaning, thoroughly dry the stainless - then apply automotive wax (NOT polish). Let wax dry to a haze and buff to a shine with a clean dry cloth.

If you paid for 316 tubing and got 304 then you paid far too much. The price difference is almost shocking. 304 SS is popular for ladders and structural items. It is strong and cheaper but will rust if left unattended. In fresh water it can do OK but in salt water you have to stay on top of it as Gord notes. Good 316 could be left alone for several years at a time.

If you can validate the order you deserve a full refund. Anyone that is in the business knows the difference. Asking you to accept the order without a serious refund is not something you should accept.
