thinking the same. i know the broker works for the seller...but he still has a duty of care and must act responsibly. any claim would rest on the details i guess

hard lesson for the buyers. so many folk we see fall in love with the 'idea' having a boat, but without any knowledge of the reality. in this case i'd suggest the buyers didn't even know what they didn't know

cheers,

Re: Just get a survey

They bought a wooden boat without a survey and a haul out?

Isn't that called getting what you deserve?

Re: Just get a survey

There was no broker involved just a real smooth salesman and a young couple in love with the wrong yacht.......I am watching closely and hopefully they can suck it up and get her back in the water and sailing.
Another person who knows the seller has already had words with him, and that seemed to achieve nothing except being told to mind his own business.
Cheers

If there was and he is Catholic, he'll be in confession the rest of his life!

I met a lovely couple yesterday that purchased a very old timber yacht for a substantial five figure sum with no survey and its a project alright.
This was the first time they had seen the yacht out of the water and the worm eaten rudder below tells most of the story and the interior and deck is not much better. There was a few tears and I bet a few hard words in private.

Good advice!

And for anyone in SE Queensland, you could do a lot worse than contacting the OP of this thread!

Re: Just get a survey

Oh my!!! That is horrible and I can't imagine what the new owners thought when they saw that and the other issues with deck and down below. Hoping the couple have $$ in reserve for anticipated "up grades", so they can at least get her in condition enough to sail in a limited manner. I know that "buyer beware" is sage advice, but as Jim mentioned, I surely hope that karma re-balances the universe and the seller "gets his due"...

Maybe the seller will get paid back someplace along the way.

Re: Just get a survey

I managed to convince them that their rotten mast was not worth saving. I then found them an aluminium mast on Facebook for $700. We checked it out this morning and they purchased it. So now it's just the hull, rudder and decks that need rot/worm removal.
Cheers

That’s all? [emoji3]

Seriously what a bummer. This seems to be a boat that wouldn’t be worth it for free even. Are you sure they aren’t better considering this sunk costs and a costly mistake and starting anew? Or do they love boat work?
Or maybe systems and sails and engine are all good?

And now they are stuck with a disposal cost at best.

If you think buying a boat is expensive, try doing it without a reputable survey.

But its a classic, full keel, bluewater boat that will take you safely and comfortably across oceans!

not always. rescued my 88 moody that has been on the hard since 9/2012 and launched two weeks ago.

went sailing on her for the first time this past weekend. less than $10K invested spent so far. crap ton of sweat equity though... and likely another $5K to get her more ship/shape down below.

GRP boats are a far cry from wooden though....

Curious, would anyone forego a survey on a brand new boat?
