KiwiGrip non skid

The Italian Job is a boat I that I own in Italy. It is a 1981 Wauquiez 33. She has been neglected for years prior to my ownership and I have spent so much time putting out fires that I couldn't make improvements. She has a new engine, a new main, new toilet in the head, double the house power then when I bought her, New cabin and hatch lights, I stopped all of the leaks. Last summer I spent a week polishing the hull. Need to do the final polish and wax yet. Epoxied soft spots in the deck.

I redid the non skid. Thought I would post some pictures.

The Prep was pretty easy. I had an 80 grit foam sanding block and sanded all of the nonskid.

Then I washed the boat with a bristle brush.

finally I went over the area with acetone to remove any last oils.

Then I taped off the non skid

Re: KiwiGrip non skid

I applied the Kiwigrip with a paint brush and then spread it with a notched trowel. The notches were around 1/8"

Rain made it hard to get it all done.

Here are some pictures of the finished product. One section is left undone I'll have to do that next summer.

I also worked on replacing the teak. I used a trex type product instead of real teak. I milled the material here in the States and brought it over as sports equipment. It was too heavy to bring it all in one trip.

It is still a work in progress. Again the rain took away my last day.

Re: KiwiGrip non skid

So on the last day when it rained and prevented me from afixing the final boards to the lazaret I squirted some oil in the cylinders turned it over a time or three by hand and then started it up. Ran like a champ on the second push of the button.

Looks great. We ended up using Interdeck on my dad's Pretorien 35. I was not super happy with the end result. I would have used Kiwi Grip, but the decks had already been coated in Interdeck, it was the middle of summer, and he was leaving in a few days. Again it really looks great!

To be honest I feel we made a bad call on using Interdeck. We did my boat with Kiwi Grip 5 years ago and really loved it. I did my dad's boat 2 years a go and the KG is holding up way better. The only area I have had to touch up is an area where someone tracked resin on the deck.

Re: KiwiGrip non skid

I like kiwigrip. I'm going to redo the decks on my other boat soon as well. Excellent product.

Re: KiwiGrip non skid

Nice to see TIJ getting some lovin! I'm planning to paint the deck and re-do the non-skid using Kiwi Grip in the spring. Nice to see a post from you!

Re: KiwiGrip non skid

In keeping with the Wauquiez/Kiwi Grip theme here , I also used it on my Pretorien. Only thing I did different was the original gel coat nonskid was so uneven, I scraped it all off with a carbide scraper, then cleaned the deck, masked and applied. Been 5 years, still looks great. Awesome product, not a whole lot of negatives.
