Laminate dull

I have a 1978 Paceship 23K that I have been working on the past few years.
The interior has a lot of laminate that have a wood appearance. Time and PO have contributed to an uneven dull finish. I have attempter hull cleaner in some spots to no avail.
Not being able to make this look acceptable I intend to make a couple new pieces and perhaps use a lighter formica with wood cabinets and drawer.
This is not a huge job as I am focusing on the cabinet at the companionway.
But any work or time saved would be nice.
Has anyone dealt with this problem?
Thanks
Bruce

Re: Laminate dull

Before you rip it all out, consider two tests: Wax the laminate, and coat it with clear varnish. Either might darken the faded Formica.

Re: Laminate dull

Thank you;
I have some areas that are not visible so will use those for a test.
Just age and having sat for ten years before I purchased the boat.

Re: Laminate dull

I had to redo all my counters due to a fire. Recommend completely disassembling the counters or whatever you are laminating. I’ve placed new laminate over old IF the original is adhered well. I found rot around sinks which required replacing the substrate. Used the old counter as a pattern. Use the NOT water soluble contact cement after wiping surfaces down with acetone. Use a veneer roller and apply as much pressure as you can. Invest in a good Palm router and the best flush trim bit you can find. I had great results.

Re: Laminate dull

Thanks again. I did purchase some marine plywood a couple years ago with the intention of redoing the cabinet face, countertop and one other piece. Finally getting around to hat job I was just curious about renewing the original. The varnish which was suggested works a bit but there are still a few faded areas that show.
This is not a large boat so there are only a few pieces to do but I would like for them to look good.
Thanks
Bruce
