Lewmar Hatch Hinge

I’m replacing a large friction hinge on a Lewmar hatch.

I drilled out the pop rivets to replace the hinge
When I attempted to install the new hinge the pop rivet didn’t old; failed to expand and slipped out of the hatch frame.

Should I be removing the hatch to replace the hinge with new pop rivets? Screws don’t want to bite.

Can anyone share experience with replacing the hinges.

Getting the frame out will be very involved , have you considered using the threaded rivets ( Rivnuts) and then using machine screws.

I have the these stays ( they are not hinges , the hinges are elsewhere ) and pop riviting is very hard due to the recess and also there’s too much “ give “ in everything
