Looking for a Project Boat

I’m looking to buy a project boat, a 24’-28’ cruiser for overnight trips to the islands.
I’m open minded as to the make and model. I want to wind up with a boat that can sleep 4, 100mile range, diesel single or twin screw inboard (no stern drive)
Most of my searching has led me to older Bertram, Carver or Chris Craft mini yachts. It seams like any of the newer boats have stern drives or outboards. I don’t know much about the construction of the older boats are the hulls fiberglass over plywood or solid fiberglass with wood/fiberglass stringers? Where can I learn about converting a stern drive or outboard to straight inboard?

Thanks for any advice,

Jimmy, whilst I can understand the desire for a project and have the T shirt myself on a previous boat, I would caution you to choose a boat with the engine in the right place rather than tying to move it from the stern to the middle of a boat. The boat will be balanced, moving engines with the problems of balancing the boat, new stringers and cabin layout, hmm lots of pain.

Instead chose a boat with the engines in the right place.

A previous project with before and after a simple fuel tank change, that turned out to be a bit more.
