Magic Sponge Erasers

I have used Magic Sponge erasers to remove marks that are caused by rubbing along the side of my slip. I now understand that these erasers work with microscopic abrasive particles. Am I damaging my Awlgrip finish or should I use a solvent?

I can't speak to what it may, or may not, be doing to your awlgrip but it is certainly releasing microplastics into the water. Perhaps a few rub marks aren't the end of the world?

Re: Magic Sponge Erasers

Good question, probably a lot, no reason to purposefully add more.

Re: Magic Sponge Erasers

Mr. Clean “Magic Erasers”, and Scotch-Brite “ Easy Erasing Pads” use melamine foam [formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer], which cleans stains effectively, with just water. They work like super-fine sandpaper, because of their hard, open-cell microstructure, of melamine foam, allows it to lift and trap dirt, within its cavities.

Proctor & Gamble [Mr. Clean] do not recommend using ‘Magic Eraser’ on surfaces with a high gloss, stainless steel appliances, non-stick coating, or on the body of a vehicle [boat], also advising that they shouldn't be paired with any chemicals, either.

Azko-Nobel advises that no abrasives be used on their “Awlgrip” paints.

Re: Magic Sponge Erasers

I have noticed that some of the newer Magic Eraser products include a soap pellet in the foam. Using a hard surface cleaner with them is beneficial.

Yes, they are slightly abrasive and will dull gloss paint. Where they really excel is removing dried grease and rubber transfer from surfaces that can't stand the use of xylene or other aromatic solvents. For example, the traditional Formula 409 used butyl ether to remove grease, which also removed latex paint.
