Maintenance Budgeting: How Often Does Your Stuff Break?

The goal of this thread is to compile information about how often different bits of gear need to be replaced (or have major repairs), as an aid to developing a maintenance budget - not only financial, but in terms of carrying spares.

How often do you replace (or do major repairs on) sails, rode, winches, batteries, radars, refrigerators, heads, plumbing lines, pumps, standing rigging, running rigging, depth finders, seacocks, cabin sole, cabin windows, tillers, wheels, VHF radios, SSB radios, outboard engines, wind vanes, autopilots, etc, etc, etc - whatever major bits of gear you have on your boat. Which repairs are monthly, yearly, every 3 years, etc.

Thanks

Re: Maintenance Budgeting: How Often Does Your Stuff Break?

Hey no disrespect but there are some very experienced cruisers on this forum. All these threads you're starting are like asking Michael Schumacher to teach high school drivers ed. Yes he can do it but it is more helpful for him to save his effort for more specific questions. You're asking good questions but please take some time to read some excellent books (eg Dashews', Beth Leonard's, many others), use the search tool, and come back with specifics.

Or better yet, spend some time on boats. You can buy a cheap one / join a club in your area.

What SV Lift said. The questions you are asking are bordering on; "why is there air?". Most of us found out by getting out there and doing. So, get out there and do it.

That is such an open ended question that there is no answer, well, there is, but it's one you will have to answer yourself.
Me, like the majority of others in the sailing world found it out for ourselves.

Make the effort to find the answers, once you have tried, and tried again, then come back, tell us what you found out, and if you have not been able to fully answer the question, then others may make the effort to help you, but the most effort needs to come from you.

You wont learn anything unless you go out and try yourself.

Re: Maintenance Budgeting: How Often Does Your Stuff Break?

How long does a car last? How often do you have to get new tires, a new alternator, new paint, new brakes?

How often do you have to paint your house? When should you get a new dishwasher? A new washer/dryer?

It is not possible to answer such an open ended question - too many variables.
