Mast step and compression post Vagabond 47

I am doing a mast step/ compression post refit on my Vagabond 47. It appears the builder (Blue Water Yacht Builders) encased steel beams in concrete for the step. Has anyone had any experience with this? How did you get it out? Grinding? What? Appreciate any advice or knowledge on the matter. Did Bill Garden really design it that way? HELP. Warren.

An angle grinder and sledge hammer gets my vote.
