Mast Step Limber Hole Issue

I purchased a 1985 Sabre 36 recently. I have pulled the mast to inspect the step. The step looks good bit the limber hole was clogged, a common issue on Sabres of this vintage.
The limber hole is simple a very small channel on the underside of the aluminum step.
To me this seems a very likely to clog design. I was considering drilling a hole on an angle through the block the step sits on and installing a pipe to run more directly and with more diameter into the bilge. The step has a larger diameter hole at the bottom which you can see in the first pic. In the second pic with the mast step removed, you can see the dirt line left by the very small channel.
Has anyone done something similar or have a better solution?
