Re: Material options for cabin trim strips.

Not sure why you are stressing about this at this point of your refit.
Why not wait until you have laid some nice faux teak or Treadmaster non skid and then see if you think you still need it.

How did you get on with establishing your levels for the interior?

Spare a thought for traditional shipbuilders who built ships with sheer , camber , tumblehome etc - all on sloping ways.

If you have a 'known vertical' somewhere you should be able to take levels off that.

Re: Material options for cabin trim strips.

I am rethinking the plans for the refit as I've missed the weather window to do the interior. Therefore I'm looking to see what I can get done on other jobs.

Also, I like to have a plan in place for each task well beforehand, it speeds up the work immensely.

Probably this job won't be going ahead until late September, maybe October, but I'll be ready to go with the materials I need on hand. I'm going to experiment with each between now and then and see which works best.

It is very similar to black paint from a few feet away.

Matt may I suggest a conversation with someone that does pinstriping on cars etc, they may be able to suggest a combination of different colours that would give the appearance of depth, instead of one colour only.

Well… yes, that may be possible, but seems complicated.

I’m not sure why everyone is so strong on the painting idea. I rather like the trim strip, I think it looks very smart. I just didn’t want the maintenance of timber.

I’ve got a whole stack of materials to try out, if none are suitable I’ll look at painting again, but if I can preserve the original look with a synthetic solution I.l be much happier.

Teak should not involve maintenance. None of my exterior teak has ever been varnished - just left bare.

Yes, El Ping, but that teak was installed before all the good teak was used up! The new teak forests are very young, as in not ready yet.

Re: Material options for cabin trim strips.

I would advise caution with using the pvc or plastic decking boards to make your trim. I have found it expands and contracts significantly in length with temperature change. It's still doable, but I have seen 12' lengths change by more than 1/2". And since it's flexible you may see it bow between fasteners on expansion, or crack when it shrinks. Just be sure you design to allow for this.
What about painted fiberglass extrusion, perhaps tube or rod cut into half round?

Good caution, thank you.

Yes, fibreglass extrusion is on my list of options. I could make something to exactly the profile I want too.

The new boat has been declared a teak-free zone.
