Re: Meranti vs Oak

I fitted out my last boat with Nyatoh but that was in 1986 and both the timber and plywood were readily available then. A couple of problems with it was the fairly extreme colour change when exposed to UV and the pepperiness of the saw dust when cut with power tools.

I'd place Nyatoh between Meranti and Tasmanian oak for strength and durability.

One of the problems with Australian hardwoods is the fairly extreme shrinkage as it seasons and the high silicon content of well seasoned wood is hell on tools unless they are tungsten tipped.
