Re: Monel water tank treatment alternatives

I thought that Monel was nearly impervious to corrosion? Bleach within reason ought to be safe?
I'd shock it if you go the bleach route and pump out the solution in a couple of hours and refill with regular city water if possible, perhaps the worst corrosion comes from long soak times?

Monel and chlorine are not a good combination. I can clean the tanks but need to prevent stuff from growing.

Why do you say that??? Monel is the most corrosion resistant metal commonly used on boats. If any metal tank would get along with chlorine, it would seem to be Monel. Just wondering where you got your information??

What you need is Puriclean. It's safe in aluminum and stainless tanks, it should be safe in monel. Clean Tabs Ltd | Water Purification | Water Purification Tablets | Water Tank Cleaning | Water Treatment | Drinking Water Disinfection

The people who think chlorine in ss tanks is ok should look at that chart.

Do note that the smallest concentration of sodium hypochlorate shown is 5%. That's straight bleach out of the bottle for quality bleach. You only need something like 25 ppm to rapidly kill most bacteria and other organisms that would be in the tank. And when you consider that folks with s/s tanks often DO use dilute bleach as a disinfectant without tank corrosion... well, perhaps it won't kill The Way's monel tank.

Re: Monel water tank treatment alternatives

Not sure just what water problem you are experiencing. After sitting some time the water from my aluminum tank gives off a non pleasant odor. Letting a bleach solution sit in the lines/ pump overnight solves the problem. This has become such a standard operation on Cbreeze I installed a small Y valve with a length of pickup hose at the water tank pickup. Mix up some solution in a 5 gal bucket (1 cup/ 5 gallions if I remember), flip the valve to the chlorine position and pump the solution thru everything but the aluminum tank. Let it sit overnight, return the valve to the normal tank pickup and flush the system. Odor problem gone except the aluminum water heater tank started leaking after 11 years. Aluminum and bleach are not friends.

Tap water + chlorine = corrosion.

Tap water + 316SS = normal practice. Every bottling plant, food process plant, potable water tanker.... I could go on, but the point is this is a false comparison. You're comparing 50,000 ppm with 0.5 ppm. You are off by a factor of one hundred thousand.

On page 72 of that chart even "chlorine water" is not reccomended. From what I can see with our ss tanks, the only thing that corrodes are the spot welds for baffles and that is on the outside, so far.
Leaving tanks in storage with a big dose of chlorine might have a risk.

"chlorine water" is a pretty ambiguous term. It is patently obvious that chlorinated tap water is commonly put in s/s tanks with no adverse results. I've done it for years, and given the occasional shock treatment as well, and not had corrosion issues.

I think this fear (corrosion from drinking water levels of chlorine compounds) is not justified.

Search this forum for Peggy Hall's directions to clean a water system. Her instructions will not harm a Monel tank. The idea that a small amount of chlorine will damage a Monel tank is a lot of rubbish.

Ordered some of the CleanTabs. Going to flush and dry the tanks this weekend.
Thanks for the advice!
