Re: Monitor Wind Vane Rudder Broke Off

I'm not sure but I was thinking this may have been from a monitor windvane. See if it looks anything like what you remember. I'm in SW Florida.

Re: Monitor Wind Vane Rudder Broke Off

There is one other measurement I forgot to give you, the mounting tube center is 1.75 inches back from the leading edge of the paddle.

Looks like a Navik servo rudder to me.

Thanks for the measurements. I have everything I need now. The only modification I might do is make the bottom of the oar rounded or elliptical.

It took me all day but I found a 38mm stainless pipe which is 1.5mm thickness, at least it's thicker than the original pipe, and it fits perfectly _inside_ the safety tube, not outside so it's slightly smaller than before, but 50% thicker I think it will work.

I couldn't find any galvanized that was the right size.

I don't have any spare safety tubes, but I never broke mine... I have heard from other people that the hinge pops out and the oar lifts normally.

The safety tube on scanmar's site is $58!?! I got the stainless pipe that is a meter long here for $8 today. It should be possible to order a stainless pipe of the right diameter to make a safety tube much cheaper at least.

I also found polyester resin, unfortunately no epoxy here.

So the plan is to get 6 or 7 stainless bolts to go through the pipe. These bolts will fit inside a hole drilled in the 6 or 7 plywood ribs. I have 1 inch plywood. I may also have additional hardwood in parallel with the stainless pipe on the leading edge for impact, and farther back for extra support. Then I can wrap the whole thing with 3 layers of glass.

I will try to post pictures in the next day or two.

Re: Monitor Wind Vane Rudder Broke Off

Back in the 80'S I lost my servo rudder off of the Aires in Indonesia and carved one out of some kind of hard wood, used it for quite awhile before it got replaced with a proper one.

How well did it work? Were there any issues? Why did you replace it in the end?
